I don't know what it is about Taft Point, but all 8 times we've been there the sunset has been 🤯🤯🤯. Maybe only Font's Point in Anza Borrego has been more consistent at sunset than Taft Point. What's crazier, is that this hike is rarely crowded. Don't get me wrong, it's still Yosemite, so if it isn't 6am you're gonna run into a couple people. But for the most part, the crowd is always super manageable. There really aren't a ton of great sunset spots in Yosemite either. Most of the views are pointing east (aka better for sunrise). This hike is also super short, so we love to just add it on to the end of a day where we are short on time. Can park 30min before sunset and get there in 15min if you really hustle. There's really nothing bad to say about this one and is a no-brainer if Glacier Point Road is open.
The Taft Point trail spits you out to a dead end with a 1000ft sheer drop on your right. There aren't a lot of opportunities to explore around and find your own secluded spots with better or equivalent views. No worries tho! As mentioned above, this hike is pretty underutilized, meaning the primary viewpoints are usually easy to claim for a bit if you don't mid waiting for a couple minutes for other groups to shuffle through. The primary viewpoints that everyone asks about are the guardrail (located here) and a heavily exposed rock with a monster free fall drop (located here). There really isn't a whole lot off to the left so you're better off just relaxing and watching the sun dip below the horizon.
The view from Taft Point is pretty much exclusively good for sunset. The view to the east is basically 100% blocked by sentinel dome, so if you have a choice 10 times out of 10 you should do this hike for sunset. Access to Taft Point requires Glacier Point Road to be open so you can only get here between May and November. (While thats not "technically" true, you could hike up from Tunnel View using the Pohono Trail, but that is an insane amount of effort for Taft Point.).
If Glacier Point Road is open, hitting Taft Point for sunset is a no-brainer. It's a super short hike, and the cliffs at the end can hang with any other viewpoint in Yosemite. Even if you aren't afraid of heights, the sheer 1000ft drops here will make you a little weak in the knees. This is one of the easiest hikes in the park, so even if you're legs are cooked from harder hikes earlier in the day, Taft Point is the perfect quick hike with little elevation gain/loss and incredible views. Our favorite way to wrap up the day in Yosemite hands down.
