Font's Point is easily the best sunset spot in Anza Borrego State Park. Particularly in winter, some of the best sunsets we've seen (anywhere) has been up on the cliffs here. This spot is no work and all reward as you can just drive right up to the edge of the rugged badlands carved by centuries of wind and water. The other thing we love about Font's Point is there are a ton of viewpoints a bit more off the beaten path where you can escape the small crowds that show up every night. Stick around after the sun goes down. This is one of the best spots to checkout the stars in southern California. Font's point is also very central to Anza Borrego, so it makes it super easy to hit as you're doing other things throughout the park.
Like much of Anza Borrego, getting here will require a bit of off-roading. It's a 4mile dirt road right off of highway S22 to get up to the main viewpoint. We have seen some low clearance vehicles (think honda civic 🤯) make it, but naturally you want an SUV or truck up here. While nice to have, 4x4 is not necessary as you're really just looking for clearance for some of the later sections of the dirt road. The sand in spots can get pretty loose early along the dirt road so maintain your momentum and you'll be fine.
Might come as a surprise, but Anza Borrego is a desert, so the best time to go is in the winter months (Oct - Mar). These months often produce the best sunsets as well. We've found this to be the case across southern California. No idea why, but winter makes for epic sunsets. We've been here for sunrise as well, which is cool too, however sunset has always been the way to go for Font's Point. Although the crowd is never really a problem here, winter is usually the busier time of year. However, check the secret spots below and it won't even matter.
Almost everyone just goes to the most obvious spots connected to the parking lot, straight out and to the left. All the good stuff is about a quarter mile to the right. There are several cliffs and ridge lines that you can walk down and explore. Our favorite spot, and where most of the photos above are taken, you can find the exact coordinates here. This spot lines up perfectly to the west so if you catch the sunset right, you can get the best views here.
If you're in Anza Borrego, it's a no brainer, you have to make a pit stop at Font's Point. Its one of the most popular spots for a reason. Just a 4mile drive off of highway S22 and you can drive all the way up to the cliffs edge. Don't be a nerd like everyone else, just hop out of your car, and snap a photo at the closest viewpoint. Per usual, you'll get rewarded if you wander around a bit. Not sure where to wander? Go this way.
